We import many of our doors directly from Indonesia where timber producers follow a programme of sustainable forestry management. As well as hardwoods of the mahogany family, other hardwoods including oak and cherry are grown, and also large pine trees.
Trees grow rapidly in the hot, humid climate and reach a height of 10 metres just 6 years from planting out saplings. Some are felled at this stage to allow the others to develop; the timber from the trees is used by local families as a fuel for cooking.
When the remaining trees mature, they have grown tall and straight in competition with each other, reaching for the light; they are felled and then that part of the forest is replanted with new saplings.
Forest plantations in Indonesia cover hundreds of thousands of hectares, so the planting, growing and felling of forest trees is a continuous process involving the whole community. |
